Swimming Squads

The Porirua Swimming club accomodates six swimming squads; three non-competitive and three competitive squads.

The squad structure is designed to cater for the various levels and needs of swimmers.

Non-Competitive Squads

Mini Squad 1

This group is at the start of the squad structure with swimmers ranging from 7 years to 11 years.

All swimmers go through this squad so that they can learn the drills and skills which will take them through the higher levels. Swimmers can come either twice a week or three times a week for a half hour each session.

Swimmers usually spend a while in this squad as we prefer all swimmers to achieve all the objectives before progress into a forty five minute of swim training with the skills learned. Putting them up too early only has them doing the skills and drills incorrectly and makes you have to back track further up the ladder.

Technique can not be comprised at this level. This is a small mini squad for young swimmers to improve their swimming technique. Swimmers learn to swim in a mini squad and develop fundamental skills all in a fun and encouraging environment. Swimmers will begin to compete at Club night competitions.

The emphasis is on the swimmers learning how to train as well as the technique work they have learnt in Mini Squad 1. Swimmers are taught all four strokes, starts and basic turns in a nurturing environment. The swimmers can enter Club night races to further develop the skills of starts and turns and evaluate their progress.
